Worried about foam and single ply?
Hi everybody,

I am interested in peoples experience spraying foam over single ply.

Mostly I am concerned that I see more and more of the big conventional putting down lots of single ply lately.

Our company has always made the best money spraying foam over really solid mineral cap asphalt roofs. We usually have a big advantage over the conventional guys in re-roofing because they have to either tare off or use re-cover board.

What I worry is that in 15 years, when these single ply roofs are shot, I will not be able to foam over them?

Does anybody else worry about foams dominance as a re-roofing product?

Hi Brian

Seems like single ply is so darn cheap. I think that there are less than 5-6 of us doing foam roofs in Louisiana consistantly. I never find that I am losing business to those guys, but I have certainly had to compete against single plys.

I have seen them as cheap as $2.25 per sq ft with 10 year warrantees. They are going right over built ups,etc...

I would feel a lot better if I was losing business to the spray foam guys. Maybe I should start putting down single plys also for the customers who only want cheap!

Clean & prime the rubber.
Spray 3/4" inch of foam.
Fasten the roof down with plates & fasteners as needed.
Spray an additional inch or 3/4" over the roof. Coat.
Go home...

What about flashing? Should I just install foam stop (Tar Stop) like normal on the edges?

Olger is right, we've used the same method.
