Hail Damage-SPF Sand Coated
Hello Mr. Knowles,

I am working on a large commercial SPF roof, the majority of the coating had sand covering applied at time of install. There are identifiable hail caused perforations in the coating at the parapet walls where no sand was used, no impacts have been found in the sand covered field. Have you ever encountered damage that was covered or hidden by a sand coating?

Thank you,

Mark

Mark,

Yes I have. While the sand helps to reduce the impact of the hail, it the hail can still cause cracks that are very difficult to observe without a more detailed inspection For example,I inspected a hail damaged SPF roof in Indiana that had granules attached to the top layer of coating. I had to get on my hands and knees to see very small depressions and cracks in the foam. They were not apparent when you were standing and even up close could very easily be missed. I was able to see that cracks after taking a slit sample across a slight discoloration. The crack went down a good half inch.
