Montana-Based Spray Applicator Specializes in Polyurea Projects, SPF Roofing

BOZEMAN, MT–June 1, 2012–In Montana, to say that spray applicators who specialize in polyurea are few and far between is an understatement.

"I'm the only one in Montana who's doing this," said Wayne James, owner of Polytech International.

The sparsity of polyurea contracting companies, while advantageous in terms of competition, presents its own set of issues with regard to builders specifying polyurea applications.

"There have been times when I've called them and said 'You've messed up the specification,'" said James, who's being spraying polyurea since 2009.

Beyond the occasional back-and-forth with specifiers unfamiliar with the material, James' main focus is on executing the spray applications. One of the larger projects Polytech has been involved with was a water tank located in Casper, Wyoming that required an interior coating of polyurea.

"There was a large tank used for hot water storage at a facility that falls under Naval Research," explained James. "It was about 60 feet in diameter and 30 feet tall."

James utilized a boom lift with an articulated arm to provide a platform from which he could spray. Despite the scale and notability of the project, no photos or video of the project were taken due to security restrictions.

James also highlighted a well Polytech was contracted to repair and re-coat at Marlboro's Crazy Mountain Ranch. That project involved James being lowered down into the well for both the pressure washing preparation and the polyurea application.

On the above-ground side of the equation, Polytech contracted with Montana State University to repair a compromised ceiling coating in one of the Department of Animal & Range Sciences buildings.

"I sprayed a ceiling in the large animal research facility where the paint was failing," said James. "I sprayed about 5,000 square feet."

James took precautions to seal off the application area step by step as he sprayed:

While polyurea applications represent a majority of Polytech's business, the company has completed numerous SPF roofing applications. One such project involved spraying 22,000 sq. ft. on top of a warehouse located in the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, home to both the Assiniboine and Sioux American Indian nations.

"I've done all kinds of stuff with spray foam," James summarized. "But polyurea is what I want to concentrate on."
