PORTERS LAKE, NOVA SCOTIA, CA – October 11, 2012 – When a newly constructed mansion in picturesque Porters Lake needed insulation for its large cathedral ceiling, aRctic Spray Foam was called in to tackle the job.
According to Chris Johnson, owner of aRctic Spray Foam, the homeowner wanted to use his new attic for dry storage and needed to keep the attic heated.
"He didn't want to vent the attic," Johnson said. "He wanted to seal the envelope from the inside because he didn't want a cold zone up there."
The entire house is constructed from insulated concrete forms (ICF). ICFs are plastic molds filled with concrete that provide permanent insulation for buildings. They are often coveted for their durability, energy efficiency, and sound absorption qualities.
As ICFs are not used for roofing purposes, the homeowner opted for spray foam insulation for the home's cathedral ceiling, which was supported by wooden scissor trusses. According to Johnson, it would have been difficult to insulate around the trusses with any other type of insulation besides spray foam.
"They really would've had an issue with insulation with all of the trusses," he said. "They would've had a hard time getting it tight."
Two crewmembers used one rig to apply 5 inches of 2 lb. closed-cell Polarfoam PF-7300-0 SOYA polyurethane spray foam to the building envelope. The entire spray area was 8,000 sq. ft. Scaffolding and safety equipment were used during the application process. Workers were able to stand in the trusses in some areas to spray.
Johnson said that aRctic's average attic projects are usually about 4,000 to 5,000 sq. ft. in spray area, so at 8,000 sq. ft., this project stood out in Johnson's mind. "This was a pretty big roof," he said.
The roof was sprayed in eight days during November and December of 2011.
