The owners of Gieske Custom Metal Fabricators were looking for a solution for two problems. First, they had leaks in their roof and with their expensive machinery, this was unacceptable. Second, their building was an open air fabrication shop that had no insulation. Something had to be done to cool the interior for the upcoming summer.
Overall, the existing modified bitumen roof substrate was in good shape, but there was no insulation between the exterior surface of the roof and the roof deck. KC Roof Care proposed the installation of an SPF and coatings system made up of 1" of 2.8 lb. roof foam insulation, top coated with our Silicone 410 for UV stability and reflectivity. The addition of the AWS Silicone 410 over the inch of foam gave the roof a much needed insulation value as well as the reflectivity qualities of the fluid applied membrane. This system resulted in a noticeably lower ambient temperature inside the fabrication shop and, with the SPF as a part of the system, created a much more pleasant work environment not only in the summer, but also in the winter.
The unique structure of this building lent itself to the SPF and fluid applied membrane system used. The barrel design with a convex end to the barrel on the front of the building certainly added to the creative way KC Roof Care would have to apply the new roof. Gieske CMF actual designed and fabricated 6 special brackets that allowed KC Roof Care to rappel down the front side of the barrel during the installation of the system. It is evident that this now insulated, monolithic roofing system will add years of life to this tired old roof and is sustainable for years to come.
